Why Your Reddit Posts Keep Getting Removed (Founder Edition)

Tan · founder, VoicePostUpdated July 20262 min read

Your Reddit posts keep getting removed and the removal reasons, when you get one at all, feel arbitrary. They aren't. After enough removals of my own, the pattern is boringly consistent: Reddit removes accounts pretending to be contributors, and the post is just where it catches them. Run the diagnosis in this order.

Cause 1: your profile fails the sniff test (most common)

When a mod sees a borderline post, they open the poster's history. If that history reads like a distribution channel (launches, plugs, and product mentions dominating), the post goes, however polite it was. This is written policy now in the big startup subs: r/SaaS's April 2026 rule update states that promoting your projects occasionally is fine, but accounts that exist mainly to promote will be removed.

Check it yourself: open your profile in a private window and skim like a stranger. If more than a quarter of your recent activity touches your product, that's your removal reason, everywhere, until it isn't. The repair ratio is one post per nine comments and one promo per three value posts, per Reddit's own small-business guidance; the full system is in how to promote your SaaS on Reddit without getting banned.

Cause 2: automod filtered you (new accounts)

If the post shows for you and gets zero of everything, log out and look. Invisible means filtered: most large subreddits automod-remove posts from accounts under karma or age thresholds (community guidance puts the common floor around 50 to 100 karma). No appeal needed; the fix is warming the account up properly before posting again.

Cause 3: the post failed the mention-deletion test

Delete your product's name from the post and reread it. Still worth posting? Then the mention was seasoning and mods usually tolerate it. Post collapses without the mention? It was an ad, and it read as one. The promo posts that survive lead with a transferable lesson (numbers, failures, what worked) and mention the product once, in context, as part of the story. One founder who's done this for years adds a warning worth engraving: the blacklist is real; argue with mods once and your later posts start mysteriously vanishing.

Cause 4: the subreddit's specific rules

Every sub layers its own rules on top: self-promo only on Saturdays, mandatory flair, minimum comment karma in that sub, frequency limits, no link posts. r/SaaS has run Self-Promotion Saturday threads for exactly this purpose, and strict subs like r/Entrepreneur remove low-effort and promotional content aggressively as a matter of identity. Thirty seconds in the sidebar before posting prevents the removals that even good accounts hit. Choosing subs by promo appetite, and where founders should even bother, is covered in r/SaaS vs r/indiehackers.

Recovery, in order

  1. Diagnose with the four causes above; be honest about cause 1.
  2. If it was rules or automod: fix, wait a few days, try the compliant version once.
  3. If you're unsure: one polite modmail asking what to change. No arguing, no reposting first.
  4. Rebuild ratio with two weeks of genuine comments before your next promotional anything.

The meta-fix is making the bookkeeping impossible to forget. VoicePost tracks your live post-to-comment ratio, checks a subreddit's promo appetite before you post there, and drafts the value-first comments that keep your history mod-proof, while you approve everything that ships. The tool landscape around it is in best Reddit marketing tools for SaaS founders.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my Reddit post removed with no explanation?
Usually automod (karma or account-age filter) or a mod removing promotional content on sight. Check the post from a logged-out window; if it's invisible, you were filtered. Then read your own profile the way a mod does: if it's mostly product mentions, that's the reason.
How do I ask mods why my post was removed?
Politely, once, via modmail: name the post, say you want to follow the rules, ask what to change. Never argue, never repost first. Mods maintain informal blacklists, and one argument can quietly cost you every future post in that sub.
Is mentioning my product ever allowed?
Yes, in most startup subreddits, occasionally, from an account with real history. Reddit's own business guide endorses roughly one promotional interaction per nine non-promotional ones. What gets removed is promotion density, not promotion.
Should I delete removed posts and try again?
Not immediately and not in the same subreddit. Rapid reposting after removal is treated as filter evasion. Fix the actual cause, wait, and come back with either a compliant post or a modmail question.
