How to promote a side hustle on Reddit without getting banned
Side-hustle communities have spent ten years being farmed. Dropshipping courses, affiliate funnels, referral chains, survey apps that pay in gift cards — the format is so worn that moderators and readers can identify a promotional post from its first sentence, and both will act on that read before they get to whether the thing is real. This is the one niche where a genuine project is presumed guilty.
That changes what a good post has to do. In most niches you are trying to be interesting. Here you are first trying to be believable, and the two need different material. A round number is a red flag. A link is a red flag. An arc that runs from unhappy job to freedom is the exact narrative shape of a course advert, so telling it truthfully still gets you filtered by people who have read four hundred fake versions of it.
The upside is that the bar, once you understand it, is easy to clear and almost nobody clears it. Post the awkward numbers, the costs alongside the revenue, the months that made nothing, and the mechanics in enough detail that someone could copy you — and you will stand out in these subs precisely because a scammer has no reason to publish any of it.
Where side hustles can actually be promoted
Each of these is a real community with its own rule. The rule is the part that matters — a good post in the wrong thread is still a removed post.
- r/SolopreneurPromo tolerated
The most promo-tolerant room in the niche and a smaller, higher-signal audience. A soft mention of what you built is tolerated when the post is genuinely about how one person runs the thing.
The rule here: Write as one person doing all of it. Any team voice — "we", an agency tone, a founder plural — is what gets removed here, ahead of the product mention itself.
- r/sidehustleConditional
The default room for "here is what is working and what it earns", so an income post is the native format rather than an intrusion.
The rule here: Post the numbers and the mechanics: what you sell, what it cost, hours a week, what the money actually was. A headline figure with no breakdown is removed, and anything carrying a referral link is removed faster.
- r/passive_incomeConditional
Mentioning your own build is tolerated when it is framed as an income stream rather than a launch, which suits a project that is already earning something.
The rule here: Frame it as a stream you built, not a product you launched — setup cost, time to first dollar, what it earns now while you are not touching it. Bare launch posts with no income story are removed.
- r/digitalnomadConditional
Worth it if your hustle solves something about working from anywhere, and unusually explicit about what it wants: real costs and real problems.
The rule here: Lead with costs and problems in a named place, with the product appearing as part of the solution. The community is worn out on aspirational framing and removes anything that reads as lifestyle marketing, however honest it is.
- r/EtsyStrict
The room for a hustle that sells physical or digital goods, and strict about the one thing sellers most want to do there.
The rule here: Shop links are removed unless the post is a critique request or a genuine milestone. Answer other sellers’ questions and let the shop sit in your profile where anyone curious will find it.
- r/beermoneyStrict
Relevant if your project pays people small amounts, and the clearest statement in the whole niche of where the line sits.
The rule here: Referral links are the thing this community exists to keep out. Recommend anything, including your own, only with the actual payout numbers and a clean non-referral link.
Rules change and moderators enforce their own reading of them. Check the sidebar before you post, every time, and see the full directory of 104 communities for the rest.
What this audience actually upvotes
Costs on the same line as revenue. Every fake earnings post reports one side of the ledger. Writing "$412 that month against $61 of ads and about six hours a week" does something a headline figure cannot: it makes the number checkable, and it tells a reader whether the thing is worth their evening. It is also the single fastest way to be read as real.
The months that made nothing. A revenue list with two zeroes in it and an explanation for each is more persuasive than any total, because the zeroes are what a person selling a course would never include. In side-hustle communities the failures are the credential.
Enough mechanics that someone could copy you. Naming the platform, the fee structure, the price you tested and abandoned, the exact thing you sell — these are the details that make a post useful and the details a funnel withholds so that you have to buy the rest. Withholding them is the tell; supplying them is the proof.
The two ratios that decide whether you get removed
Enforcement on Reddit is account-level, not post-level. A moderator opens your profile after one post trips their attention and skims what fraction of the account is about its product. That is why a reasonable post attached to a promotional profile still goes.
9:1 — comments to posts. Reddit's self-promotion guidance implies about nine contributions that have nothing to do with your product for every one that does. It comes from Reddit's 2014 moderator clarification and its current small-business guide restates it as “be a user first”.
3:1 — value posts to promotional posts. Among your submissions, at most one in four should promote anything. Clearing 9:1 while every post you make is a plug still reads as a marketing account.
The mention-deletion test. Delete your product name from the post and reread it. If nothing of value is left, it was an advertisement with context attached and it will be removed. If it still teaches something, the mention is a footnote on a real contribution.
New accounts have a further problem: most large subreddits silently filter posts from accounts under a karma or age threshold, so the post looks live to you and is invisible to everyone else. Check yours with the karma and warmup calculator before you post at all.
What gets side hustles removed
Leading with the money
"How I make $3,000/month" is the title of every scam these communities have ever removed, and a real result written in that shape inherits all of the distrust. r/sidehustle specifically removes vague earnings claims with no detail, and readers downvote the shape before they have read a word of the body.
Instead: Open with the mechanism and the hours, put the money in the middle of the post where it reads as data rather than a promise, and make the figure precise. $2,147 is believed in a way that $2,000 is not.
Including any link at all
In this niche a clean link and a referral link look identical until someone hovers, and nobody hovers. r/beermoney and r/WorkOnline restrict referral links explicitly, r/Etsy removes shop-link drops, and the rest of the category treats a link as the sentence that reveals what the post was for.
Instead: Leave the submission linkless. If the post is good, "what is it?" arrives within the hour, and an answer given to a direct question is a different object from a link in the post body.
Telling the "I quit my job" story
It is the structure of a sales funnel — dissatisfaction, discovery, escape — so telling it truthfully still triggers the pattern match. r/digitalnomad in particular has stopped tolerating aspirational framing and removes it, which catches people whose story is entirely genuine.
Instead: Tell it flat and out of order. The mechanics, the costs, what broke, what you would not do again. If you left a job, that is a line in the middle, not the arc of the post.
Answering "what is it?" with "DM me"
This is the strongest single spam signal in side-hustle communities, and it is the point at which a post that had been going fine gets reported. Moving the conversation private is what someone selling something does, and everyone reading has watched it happen before.
Instead: Answer in the thread, in public, in full. If the thing is small enough to be identifiable and you would rather not name it, say that plainly and describe the category instead. Being visibly unwilling to sell is worth more here than the sale.
A post that would survive
Written for r/sidehustle. Adapt the specifics; keep the shape.
Nine months of selling spreadsheet templates to one trade: $2,147 total, full costs, and the two months it made nothing
Why it survives: It never names the product, never names the trade, and carries no link — the mention-deletion test passed by construction, because there is nothing to delete and the post is still the most useful thing in the feed. It clears the r/sidehustle rule by supplying full mechanics rather than a headline figure, and it clears the niche-specific credibility bar three separate ways: costs sit beside revenue, the totals are unrounded and small, and the two zero months are explained rather than omitted. The pricing mistake is the load-bearing detail; nobody running a funnel publishes the month they broke their own business.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I promote my side hustle on Reddit?
- Yes, in a narrow shape. r/Solopreneur tolerates it when the post is genuinely about how one person runs the thing, r/sidehustle when you supply real numbers and mechanics, and r/passive_income when it is framed as an income stream rather than a launch. What none of them tolerate is a link, a headline earnings figure with no breakdown, or a post that reads like a course advert.
- Why do my side hustle posts keep getting removed?
- Usually the shape rather than the content. These communities have spent years filtering dropshipping courses and affiliate funnels, so a money-first title, a link in the body, a round revenue number, or a "DM me for details" reply all match the pattern they are trained on. Removals here are frequently automatic and rarely explained. Strip the link, make the numbers precise, and put the costs next to the revenue.
- Can I post referral links on Reddit?
- Almost never where it matters. r/beermoney restricts them specifically, r/WorkOnline removes them, and across the niche a referral link is the clearest evidence a post was written for the poster rather than the reader. Some subreddits run a dedicated referral thread; outside one of those, use a clean link or no link at all.
- Which subreddits allow you to promote a side project?
- In this niche, r/Solopreneur is the only one rated promo-tolerant, with r/sidehustle, r/passive_income and r/digitalnomad conditional on the framing. r/beermoney, r/Etsy, r/Flipping, r/dropship and r/WorkOnline are strict and remove product, course and tool promotion. If your project is software rather than a hustle, the SaaS and indie communities are a better fit than any of these.
- How do I talk about money on Reddit without sounding like a scam?
- Publish the things a scammer has no reason to publish. Exact unrounded figures, costs on the same line as revenue, hours worked, the months that earned nothing and why, the price change that backfired. Every one of those makes the post less flattering and more believable, and in a niche where believability is the constraint, that is the trade worth making every time.
